Notes - Hi, I think it's likely it is because it was the property name. Another thing I saw in the FB genealogy page above is that the Ortner family purchased the Hochkofler property. I have multiple instances in my tree where the property name was taken once it was either purchased, or by marriage. In fact my great grandfather's family name was originally Frevert, but his great grandfather married the widow Bunte on the Bunte property, and the name was "deeded" to indicate inheritance rights when the marriage took place. So the next generations were recorded as Frevert oder Bunte (Frevert or Bunte) and then when they came the the US, they went by Bunte. I had the surprise that my father's maternal line was not Bunte but Frevert, before 1753. The children from the first marriage to another woman were not called "Frevert oder Bunte" but just Frevert. The second set of children (half siblings) were called Frevert oder Bunte because they were born there, and had the inheritance rights to the property. I think the Ortner and Hochkofler probably had something similar though we'll need to have someone explain it. I would not have known how to find my Frevert oder Bunte info if someone who was also related (and fortunately is still living in Germany) had not told me of the reasons for the name changes, and had seen the records in person. It's really opaque trying to figure it out just looking at what we have, but I'm sure there are deeds and records that tell what actually happened.
