Patrick Kane was indeed the brother of my great-grandfather, John Kane. The Kane family came from a townland called Agivey in Aghadowey, in what is now Northern Ireland. John married Elizabeth Ann McGarry in the Catholic Church in Mullahinch, 19 June 1875. They moved to Scotland and John died young when he fell off a ladder at work in 1892. I have a photograph from about 1893 with his widow and children. I have the marriage record for Patrick and Bridget McAleese, which shows Bridget’s parents. Patrick’s other siblings were Rose, who moved to Dumbarton, Scotland; Thomas, who I can’t find out much about and Catherine, who moved to Greenock, Scotland. As you know, their parents were Patrick Kane and Susan Mullen. I’m struggling, like you, to identify the Kane line but Susan also moved with her children to Greenock, where she died. Her parents were Thomas Mullen and Catherine Boyle. I visited Aghadowey recently. Sadly, the church has been knocked down but we stayed in a hotel in Agivey, which was previously owned by the McAleese family.

------------
John Kane moved to Greenock from Aghadowey around 1878/79. A couple of years earlier he tried to find work in Glasgow but appears to have abandoned this idea and finally settled in Greenock. Greenock is where the boats from Ireland arrived. Many Irish migrants arrived in Greenock and settled there - our family are still in Greenock.
I’ve done quite a bit on the Kane/Mullen side but, as you will know, many of the Irish records were destroyed during the Civil War and many were pulped to assist the war effort, so it’s difficult to get really far back.
