Mary Carmela Sculco was the first child of Girardo and Maria Antonia (Salimbeni) Sculco to be born in the United States. According to her birth records, she was born on Friday, July 15, 1898 in New York City at 411 East 112^th Street, between 1^st and 2^nd Avenues in the Borough of Manhattan. Her father had immigrated from Corigliano, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy in November of 1890 and was followed seven years later by Maria Antonia.
