BIOGRAPHY
Poppo was a Frankish count in the Grapfeld from 819 to about 839. Probably a descendant of the Robertian count Cancor, he became the ancestor of the Frankish house of Babenberg (the Popponids).

Poppo was a 'leading man of the Franks' in 838-839, when he and several other noblemen, including Gebhard, Graf im Lahngau, Graf Adalbert von Metz and Archbishop Odgar of Mainz opposed the revolt of Ludwig II 'the German', king of the East-Franks, against his father Emperor Louis I 'the Pious'.

Poppo died between 839 and 841. He was the father of Heinrich, Markgraf von Babenberg, Poppo II, Markgraf der Sorbenmark, who would both have progeny, and Egino, count of East Franconia and duke of Thuringia.
